Michele Hyra
Woodinville, WA

Michele Hyra
Woodinville, WA
As of today, Michele has been fighting stage 4 breast cancer that has metastasized into her bones for 2 years, 5 months, 3 weeks and 3 days. She would, however, tell you that she doesn't buy into the use of "fighting" cancer when you read her blog (http://www.teamhyra.blogspot.com/). It's not something to fight, but something to endure. Michele is the mom of two beautiful daughters, and up until her life changed so dramatically with the diagnosis, she worked full time.
Michele and I have a good friend in common--that's how we met. I knew of her, knew that my friend had gone to college with her, and that she lived in the area. Our joint friend, Christa, shared her diagnosis with me.
Mary Ann Radmacher once said, "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow." Over time, I've had a few opportunities to talk with Michele and help out in simple ways; and, I am amazed and humbled by her and her strength. Day in. Day out. Even with her own challenges, she is still there for those around her--her family, her friends, and as an advocate for those (like her) who are affected by this horrible illness.
Her latest PET scan, after nine months of chemotherapy of the Abraxane and Avastin, the cancer is almost gone. There remain a few hot spots which will require her to undergo more chemo through April of this year. Her doctor feels that this will help to kill the rest of the cancer cells and give her the best chance at a longer term remission. In spite of this, she has asked all of her girl friends to sign up for a tap dance class together--just to do something fun!
Whether she would admit it or not, she is a champion fighter--the bravest chick I have ever met. She has suffered more than anyone I know, and Michele needs to know how what a role model she is for her daughters and all women.
Thank you for your consideration.
